Go into synaptic and install mediainfo-gui. I use mediainfo to get video/audio details. So, as mentioned, the filename extension doesn't really have much to do with anything. Though if you put h264 into an avi file it's a good sign whoever encoded it didn't know what they were doing. Most people encode to h264 format video nowadays, and you can put this in a number of containers. A container may have any of a number of codecs actually in the file.
